Community Security Service Statement on Colleyville Synagogue Incident

New York, NY, January 15, 2022 … The Community Security Service (The CSS) expresses deep concern over the hostage situation at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas.

According to law enforcement, an armed male subject entered the synagogue and began making threats to congregants inside. Police and FBI responded and began conducting SWAT operations, resulting in a standoff and hostage situation. According to reports, the subject was holding at least four congregants hostage.

Evan R. Bernstein, National Director and CEO of The CSS, issued the following statement:

“The threats to Jews in the United States remain real and dangerous, as evidenced by the events today. We will be dissecting lessons from this incident as details emerge, and redoubling our efforts to strengthen the safety and security of synagogues and Jewish institutions across the country.

Today’s events serve as another clear reminder to Jewish communities nationwide that prioritizing security is paramount. Our thoughts are with the hostages, their families and the Colleyville Jewish community.”
